The Bane Chronicles: The Course of True Love (And First Dates)

Alec was late. He was really late. Late enough that he was pretty sure Magnus would have given up on him. Damn Jace wanting to train and Alec's inability to think of a good enough excuse to get out of it.

He'd rushed through a shower and pulled on a light-blue shirt that was actually new. Izzy said it did good things for his eyes. Alec hoped they were good enough for Magnus to forget that he was supposed to be there more than twenty minutes ago. He also hoped Izzy had been right about the cologne. He'd never worn cologne before.

As he sprinted through the Brooklyn streets to Magnus's loft, Alec dodged between pedestrians and once or twice vaulted a low wall that was in his way. He couldn't be bothered to stop for things like red lights, so he just flitted between (or over) cars where necessary. He was already late, but he didn't have to be any later.

By the time he got to Magnus's loft and threw himself at the buzzer, he actually needed to catch his breath.

"I always do this with Isabelle and Jace," Alec admits. "And they're not here. And I can't call them."

[highwarlock_bane]

"Why not?" Magnus asks. Not that he wants any more Shadowhunters involved.

[strongest_faith]

Alec didn't answer. How could he? What would he say? 'I can't call them because I don't want them to know who I'm with'?

And without them...he's no good attacking. His run-in with Abbadon showed him that more than ever. With Jace and Izzy, he stayed back, protected them while they went on the offensive.

Magnus then realizes why and understood Alec's problem.

"You'll do great without them. I can help you."

Alec wasn't entirely sure about that, but he nodded and moved forward anyway, keeping in front of Magnus as he went.

There were still people in the bar, but they were pressed against the wall in terror, and Alec wondered what they were thinking in this moment, whether they knew what sort of danger they were in.

He heard sobbing from somewhere, and he followed the sound.

There was a low, rattling growl coming from the back lounge of the bar.

Magnus let Alec keep in front of him.

It was dark, and Alec struggled to see, wishing he'd applied runes on the way over. As he moved forward, he could hear the werewolf growling a challenge.

There was a suddenly a slender girl with her hair in long coils, trailing ribbons and blood. The girl dashes straight at them. Magnus leaped forward and caught her arms before she could distract or be attacked by Alec.

Don't let him hurt her!"
"How badly did she hurt you?"

The two said at the same time.

Magnus paused and then said, "We may be at somewhat of an impasse. Let's try yes or no questions. Are you badly hurt?" he looked her over, she had a deep scratch all the way up one smooth brown arm.

She glared at him. "No," she said.

She was of course lying and Magnus could tell but instead of calling her out on it he asks, "You're a mundane, aren't you?"

[strongest_faith]

"Yes...I'm not a werewolf or anything, if that's what you mean," she said.

[highwarlock_bane]

"But you know she's a werewolf?" Magnus asks to be certain.

[strongest_faith]

"Yes, dumbass," she snapped. "She told me. I know all about it. I don't care. It's my fault. I encouraged her to go out."

[highwarlock_bane]

"I'm not the one encouraging werewolves to go out at the full moon, but perhaps we can settle which of us is the dumbass at a better time."

Magnus held on to the girl's arm and used his magic to stop the bleeding.

While Magnus dealt with the mundane, Alec continued his approach on the werewolf. He was trying not to hurt her, trying to get her to back down, and that made him hesitant to attack. (That and his unfamiliarity with it. He kept wishing Jace and Izzy were here, and knowing it was useless to wish for.)

Spotting an opening, he lunged for the werewolf.

"One last question, Can you trust me to see your friend safe?"

After a slight hesitation the girl answered, "Yes"

"Then go wait outside the bar." after rattling off some further instructions, What's your friend's name?"

"Marcy"

"Go for her sake." the girl obeyed and Magnus turned his full attention back to Alec.

Alec's blades are sheathed, and he is doing the best he can to keep the werewolf in check without hurting her. She must be scared, and that on top of the full moon means she's not in control of her actions.

It must be terrifying.

Magnus prepares himself, his magic at the ready.

He'll figure out which spells will be of use as they go. For now he will just back up Alec.

"Alexander" Magnus calls out

[strongest_faith]

Alec turns his head when he hears his name, and the werewolf strikes, too close for comfort as Alec leaps back, barely avoiding her claws, and drops into a neat tuck and roll, landing in a crouch in front of Magnus.

"You have to stay back," Alec says breathlessly.

Magnus threw a ball of blue fire at the werewolf.

"You have to remember I'm a warlock"

[strongest_faith]

The ball sent the werewolf spinning and the few people left in the bar scattering for the exit.

"I know," Alec said, peering into the shadows for a glimpse of the werewolf. "I just want..."

But he never got to say what he wanted because the werewolf had gotten up and was stalking toward them. "I think...I think you made her mad."

[highwarlock_bane]

Magnus followed Alec's gaze.

"Those are some excellent observational skills you have there, Alexander." Magnus tries not to sound sarcastic.

Alec tried to push Magnus back, moving them both out of the back lounge where the werewolf's friend had cleared the room, leaving a wide, empty room for the werewolf to stalk them through.

Alec thought if he could catch her by surprise, he might be able to tackle her to the ground, so, without warning, he broke away from Magnus to lunge at the werewolf.

She wasn't as surprised as he'd hoped though, and when she swiped this time, he didn't quite move fast enough to jump from her reach. Alec went flying into a mirror on the wall, hitting it hard enough to crack the glass.

Magnus wasn't expecting Alec breaking away.

And then he was flying through the air and he was horrified as Alexander hits the mirror on the wall. "Oh, stupid Shadowhunters"

[strongest_faith]

Alec rebounded off the mirror, leaping for a chandelier and swinging from it to drop lightly in front of the werewolf and crouching to attack again.
